Guest DOMUS MARIA is situated in the very heart of Vilnius Old Town, in a complex of buildings that was started in the 16th century to form an impressive architectural ensemble: the Gate of Dawn with the Chapel of St. Virgin Mary the Mother of Grace and the miraculous painting of Mary, the early-baroque Church of St. Teresa and St. John of the Cross. The whole ensemble has an irregular shape that matches the configuration of the defensive wall of the city.
Guest House DOMUS MARIA is based on the premises of a former monastery of Discalced Carmelites. The monastery was built in 1621-1627 at the initiative of the burgomaster of Vilnius and his brother. The ground floor of the main building houses a refectory, monk cells, a storage room, a barn, a bakery and a kitchen, other levels contain cells. The rooms used to be decorated with paintings and frescoes, which still decorate the Great Hall to this day. In 1703 to 1723, the monastery housed a noviciate, later was a place for studies in philosophy. Also, the Discalced Carmelites of Vilnius enjoyed a city-wide renown for their beer and candles. The monastery was damaged in the wars of mid-17th century and early 18th century. In 1844, the monastery was shut down and handed over to orthodox monks. In 1861 to 1915, the monastery facilities were used for a girls’ school. Over the period from 1918 to 1931, there was a dormitory of girls (students, crafts-girls, maids) and a crafts-shop supported by the Lithuanian Charity Fellowship running on the premises of the monastery. In the wake of the Second World War, the Engineers’ Institute of Vilnius was lodged there. Guest House DOMUS MARIA is close to one of Lithuania’s most important Catholic sanctuaries – the Chapel of the Gate of Dawn. Cities of the Christian Europe are very much converse with the tradition to place a statue of a saint or hang a painting on one in archways, roadside chapels or gateways. This might have been the case with the painting of the Mother of God at the Gate of Dawn. This is where one of the city’s main streets – Didžioji Str. begins The painting of the Mother of God was delivered for care to the Carmelites by the magistrate o the city in 1668, allowing the order to erect a chapel on top of the city’s Gate of Dawn. Since then, the monastery of St. Teresa was tightly linked with the painting of St. Mary Mother of Grace, the origins and the history of its cult. In 1935, the painting of Mercy of God, painted according to the visions of St. Faustina, was hung at the Chapel of the Gate of Dawn for the first time. In 1927, Pope Pius the 2nd allowed to ceremoniously crown the Madonna of the Gate of Dawn with two golden crowns, and in 1928 she was granted the title of St. Virgin Mary Mother of Grace (Mater Misericordiae). Pope John Paul II prayed there on September 4, 1993. Staying at Guest House DOMUS MARIA you will feel the unique aura of the rooms that have been outfitted with subtlety in the cells of the late-renaissance monastery. |
